Common Things That Can Damage Your Teeth
Good dental hygiene habits are some of the best ways to keep your teeth healthy, but some everyday habits could be hurting your teeth in spite of your best efforts. Ditching these habits can be a great way to preserve your dental health and enjoy a happier, healthier smile.
1. Eating the wrong foods
Sugary treats like candy and cookies are obviously off the table when it comes to tooth health, but many people are unaware of the damage that starchy foods such as breads, chips, and rolls could be doing. These foods are often hidden sources of sugar, which feeds oral bacteria. Limit your intake of white breads and similar processed foods and look instead for whole grain products without added sugar.
2. Using your teeth inappropriately
Teeth were made to bite and chew food. Unfortunately, many people use them to bite fingernails, chew pencils, or open packages. This can damage your teeth and increase the risk of misalignment. Use the appropriate tools for these tasks, and protect your teeth with a mouthguard if you are a tooth grinder.
3. Brushing too aggressively
Many people believe that brushing with a hard-bristled brush, using a firm hand or brushing frequently can keep their teeth cleaner. However, these habits can actually strip the enamel right off your teeth, leaving them more vulnerable to bacterial assaults. Instead, use a gentle, circular motion to brush your teeth with a soft-bristled brush. Brush at least twice a day but no more than three times a day using fluoride toothpaste for the best results.
