Mistakes You Make in Your Dental Care
1. Vigorous brushing
Brushing cleans plaque and debris on your teeth, which is why many people think that brushing harder equals cleaner teeth. It does not and can actually erode the protective enamel coating on your teeth. Using anything other than a soft-bristled toothbrush or using too much pressure can be bad for your smile.
2. Failure to floss
Flossing is just as important as brushing when it comes to keeping your teeth clean. Food particles, plaque, and eventually tartar can build up between your teeth and near the gum line. Use your floss to clean all these hard-to-reach areas. If you struggle with traditional dental floss, there are flossing tools that can simplify the job.
3. Speeding through your dental hygiene
If you find yourself going on autopilot when brushing, you may not be spending enough time cleaning your teeth. You need to brush at least two minutes to get each surface of your teeth clean. Use a timer to help you stay on track.
4. Brushing unevenly
You start brushing with the best intentions, but it can get easy to get distracted. Brush each quadrant of your mouth for 30 seconds using gentle, circular motions or use an electric toothbrush to ensure perfectly even, clean results.
5. Grabbing sugary drinks before bed
When you sleep, your mouth can become dry. If you drink juice, soft drinks, or even milk right before you sleep, you could be setting yourself up for serious dental problems. The sugars and acids in your drink combine with oral bacteria to create a toxic mixture that erodes your teeth. Drink only water after you have brushed your teeth to protect them.
